Based in Mill Bay on Vancouver Island’s southern coast, Higginson Consulting is a young, growing company rapidly gaining a solid reputation around the Island and Lower Mainland as a reliable, energetic and efficient construction management team.

Construction Management
As construction managers, we step into a project and act as a link between owners, contractors, engineers and architects. Providing
sound advice and expertise throughout the construction process, we seek to keep project costs down and maintain schedules.
Whether your project requires site inspections, subcontractor coordination, or construction management, our ability to liaise
between field staff and office professionals assists in maintaining open and accountable communication throughout the project.
Project Management
Project management builds on construction management to include the overall planning, coordination and control of a project from inception to completion. Through the process of feasibility studies, estimating, tendering, scheduling, contract management, site inspections, change orders, and project close out, we aim to integrate engineering, architecture, construction and owner’s criteria into one efficient process. The intention is to produce a functionally and financially viable project that will be completed within schedule and budget constraints and meet or exceed the project owner’s quality and service standards.
Business Communication
Business communication is used to relay information between the project team and deal effectively with managing changes
and complications as they arise. In contracting, it is critical that the project documentation is kept current to ensure equitable
understanding between all parties through concise records. Some of the methods we use to accomplish this include:
- E-mails: which are used as an informal communication medium or as a method of transmitting formal documents
- Reports; either daily, weekly, or monthly: used to document the activities of the project.
- Presentations: to convey a large amount of information to the entire team,
- Face-to-face meetings; either on site or in the office, and followed up with written record
- Voice conferencing: where face-to-face meetings are not possible, the use of teleconferencing is often a viable alternative
Estimating
With both civil and structural construction experience, we are able to offer a variety of accurate estimating services. We
understand that contract estimates are often proprietary or confidential, and have various methods for ensuring the clients’ data is
respected. Whether it’s setting a budget for an owner, evaluating contractor’s bids, or submitting a bid for a lump sum contract, our
knowledge of construction processes and tender law in Canada will bring value to the project team.
Projects
Feature ProjectsBC Transit – Installation of Brake Testing Devices
This project consisted of installing brake testing equipment into two of BC Transit’s fleet maintenance facilities. The equipment was purchased from a supplier in the USA, and local contractors performed all of the concrete slab and electrical work to accommodate the testing machines into the existing facilities.
Higginson Consulting Ltd. (HCL) was involved with this project mainly from a construction management perspective. Working closely with BC Transit staff, HCL tendered the engineering and contracting portions of the project, implemented construction contracts, provided the site inspections, contractor coordination, in addition to the construction management. The project team worked successfully to see that the project was completed efficiently and within budget. General contracting was completed by Kinetic Construction Ltd., electrical contracting was by Emery Electric Ltd., and Herold Engineering Ltd. provided the structural design.
South Cowichan Rotary Club – Kinsol Trestle River Access Trail
This project consisted of building a new access trail from the north abutment of the Historic Kinsol Trestle down to the Koksilah River. Steep grades and dense west coast rainforest made this project challenging in addition to tight project timelines and coordination with other site contractors.
Higginson Consulting Ltd. (HCL) provided the overall project management for this task. HCL selected a local contractor for this work, and in conjunction with MacDonald & Lawrence Timber Framing Ltd., coordinated all site work including weekend volunteer work and site safety. Rough trail construction was completed by HRH Contracting (Bill Turner); clearing, grubbing, and surface gravels were all placed by volunteers from the South Cowichan Rotary Club. This project was completed successfully under budget and within the schedule constraints. As a commitment to the local community, HCL donated the project management and site inspection services for this project, and is proud to have been part of the project team.
